Snowskating
Sowskating in Winter

To enjoy many adventure winter sports, such as skiing and snowboarding you need to go to a resort. This can make these sports inaccessible to many people. However, for those people who live in areas that commonly see snow on the ground, there is an adventure sport you can do in your local area, on your streets or in your back yard. Snowskating is a relatively new sport that is akin to a cross between snowboarding and skateboarding. It is like snowboarding in that you use a board on snow and skateboarding in that it is a street activity and you don`t have bindings like you do on a snowboard (your feet are not bound to the board).
Although snowskating can be seen as part of the winter sports family, it really has more in common with skateboarding than anything else. Indeed, it is an ideal activity for skateboarders who can`t skate because of snow. The snowskate itself is a lot like a skateboard on its upper surface, whereas underneath it is more like a ski it does not have wheels of course. Propulsion comes from slopes and also by pushing off with one foot (as you would a skateboard), as opposed to requiring large downhill runs. The main thrill for good snowskaters comes from performing tricks and jumps. Although there are now special skateparks, as you would find for skateboards, many tricks are just as well conducted on urban furniture such as stairs, railings and park benches. There are two different types of snowskates: bideck and single deck. Single deck skates are best for freestyle skating and tricks, they often have a grooved based for improved control and to make tricks like rail grinding easier. Bidecks are made up of a skateboard deck mounted on top of a smaller snowboard-like bottom deck.
Snowskating is a sport that has an element of danger to it. Although it is possible to injure yourself, this risk is minimised by following basic safety tips. Firstly, where a helmet. The best sort of helmet to where is a snowboarding helmet, but other sorts of helmets can also be effective. Don`t forget that although the snow will cushion your impact somewhat it is still possible to hurt yourself badly if you fall and your head is the most vital area to protect. It`s also best to avoid skating on streets where there is traffic because the conditions that are ideal for snowskating make driving very difficult. If you are skating in an area where cars might be then it is advisable to wear bright clothing.
One final thing to remember is to where warm clothing whilst snowskating. It`s obvious that if there`s snow on the ground then it is going to be cold. You need to wear gloves, a hat (or insulated helmet), warm socks and water-proof shoes.
Fortunately, there`s a good selection of great gear available from online shops, so you will never be short of cool, warm clothes to wear whilst snowskating.
